Passage

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Reflection

There are seasons a family doesn’t choose: an illness, a loss, a financial hardship, a change nobody asked for. In the middle of those seasons, it’s easy for each person in the house to try to carry their own part in silence, thinking that’s how they protect everyone else, without realizing it only multiplies the weight instead of sharing it out.

Ecclesiastes describes something simple but profound: two people working together not only get more done, they also have someone to lift them up when they fall. That’s exactly what a family can offer itself in a hard season: no one has to go through it entirely alone, because there are others close by who can hold up what one person can’t carry in that moment.

Paul says it even more directly: “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). He doesn’t say each person should solve their own burden on their own. He says they should be shared. That’s one of the most concrete ways a family can live out the love of Christ among themselves: not by avoiding the pain, but by refusing to let anyone carry it alone.

Prayer

Lord, in this hard season, help us as a family not to carry our own part in silence. Give us the humility to ask for help and the willingness to offer it. Thank you that we don’t have to go through this alone. Amen.
