Passage

“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:41-42

Reflection

Martha wasn’t doing anything wrong. She welcomed Jesus into her home, prepared what was needed, did exactly what you’d expect of a good host. Her problem wasn’t serving. It was that at some point, she stopped serving out of love and started serving out of anxiety, upset that her sister wasn’t carrying the same weight.

Jesus doesn’t tell her to stop working. He tells her she’s careful and troubled, and that only one thing is needful. Mary, sitting at his feet, producing nothing visible in that moment, chose the good part. That’s unsettling if your worth has spent a long time being measured by how much you got done in a day, how many tasks you closed out, how much you held up without anything collapsing.

Jesus’s invitation isn’t to perform better. It’s to sit down, even for a few minutes, without the to-do list pushing you from the inside, and let that also count as something good, not as wasted time. Your place at his feet isn’t earned by finishing everything else first. It’s already there, available, waiting for you to take it before the anxiety convinces you that you still haven’t earned it.

Prayer

Lord, my body is tired of measuring my worth in finished tasks. Today I want to sit at your feet, without having resolved everything pending, and trust that this too is time well spent. Teach me to tell apart the service that comes from love from the one that comes from anxiety. Amen.
