Passage
“And the Spirit of God descended like a dove, and lit upon him. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:16-17
Reflection
Jesus hears that voice before healing anyone, before teaching a single parable, before the cross. The Father doesn’t wait for the ministry to declare love. He declares it at the start, with no prior condition to meet.
Most men reverse the order: achievement first, then, maybe, the right to feel like enough. A promotion, a finished project, explicit approval. And even when it comes, the feeling of being enough doesn’t last long. It has to be earned again with the next challenge.
Romans 8 offers a different starting point. It doesn’t say you’ll be adopted if you earn it. It says you already received the Spirit of adoption, and that this Spirit is what lets you call God “Father” with a son’s confidence, not the nervousness of someone who still has something to prove.
That doesn’t make what you do today irrelevant. It removes the weight it was never meant to carry: being proof of your worth.
Prayer
Father, today I want to hear what Jesus heard before doing anything: that I am loved, with no prior condition. Forgive me for looking in achievement for what you already gave me through adoption. Help me live today as a son, not as someone who still needs to earn a place in your family. Amen.
